Soft shackles are a lightweight alternative to traditional steel shackles and can be used to connect a variety of rigging items. Dawnerz soft shackles are manufactured using a 12-strand UHMWPE construction, which is commonly used in synthetic ropes and winch lines.

Recovery soft shackles are becoming a popular choice for many recovery operators. They are lightweight, easy to handle and store, and can be up to 7 times lighter than comparable steel shackles. They also store less potential energy than steel shackles, making them a safer choice for many recovery applications.

Each Dawnerz soft shackle has a clearly marked ID tag containing the manufacturing date, recommended working load limits at both 3.1 and 5.1 safety factors, and the Minimum Breaking Strength, along with a safety tag containing additional product information.

Care & Storage Tips

  • Rinse with clean water after use in mud, sand or salt
  • Inspect the sleeve before each use for cuts, cracking, excessive wear or exposed fibers
  • Inspect the eye and button for cuts, fraying, damage or stiffness
  • Store in a clean, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat
  • Avoid prolonged contact with sharp edges, even when the soft shackle is not under load

When to Replace

  • Exposed UHMWPE fiber at any contact point
  • Cuts, abrasion, fraying or other visible damage anywhere on the soft shackle
  • Faded, brittle or degraded fibers indicating UV or environmental damage
  • Any use where the soft shackle was overloaded or subjected to a load at or above its rated WLL
  • If the tag is missing or the markings are illegible, the soft shackle should not be used.

What is a soft shackle and how is it used?

A recovery soft shackle is a high-strength synthetic connector made from 12-strand UHMWPE fiber. It provides a lightweight and flexible connection point for connecting recovery straps, winch lines, bridles and other recovery equipment.

How do you safely use a recovery soft shackle?

Connect only to smooth, radiused and appropriately rated recovery points. Avoid sharp edges, small-diameter hardware and improperly rated anchors. Operate within the Working Load Limit specified for the particular soft shackle being used. Tension lines gradually, keep the load aligned and avoid shock loading or side loading. Make sure the soft shackle is properly seated before applying a load.

How long do soft shackles last?

Soft shackles are designed for repeated use when properly used, inspected and maintained. Check before and after each use for cuts, abrasion, fraying, pulled strands, heat damage or other visible damage. Remove the soft shackle from service immediately if damage is found. Service life depends on load frequency, environment, application and maintenance.

Why are synthetic shackles preferred to steel shackles?

Soft shackles provide a high strength-to-weight ratio and are significantly lighter and more flexible than traditional steel shackles. Their flexible construction allows them to be used around recovery points where rigid hardware may be difficult to position. They also eliminate the heavy metal body and removable pin found on conventional shackles.

Do soft shackles float on water?

Yes. UHMWPE fiber is naturally buoyant, so Dawnerz soft shackles can float in water. This can make them easier to locate and retrieve during wet, muddy or flooded recovery situations.
